grønland

hi. i am now in Nuuk/Gothhåb, Greenland. i am the home of one Pauli Ø., a young Faroese guy who is hosting me for the week. he patiently waited to collect me from the airport today after my flight had to be diverted to Kulusuk (east Greenland) due to bad weather in Nuuk. i eventually made it in about 1.5 hours later, after a really turbulent and foggy landing aboard a tiny airplane.

i'm really, really tired right now. just a short post to mark the occasion. i made it!

elisa saga

the wrapping up of a busy weekend is underway. the exhibition went really well. i was quite inspired by the wide range of work the artists presented, and the space was a wonder. my presentation was tiny and quiet but that's just how i'm feeling these days. it feels good to be working on tons of stuff and ideas but the editing process when it comes to putting together pieces for a show is enjoyable too. in the midst of this long journey interpretation without respite can get to be a little much...

anyway, here are some images from the weekend. the images of my work are just some quick snaps i took at the opening, forgive the quality for now

the next day (Saturday) we all woke up late and then headed to town to an event i'd wanted to check, a skate competition being put on by a shop called Underground. i think it's been one of the first skate competions in Iceland, and according to the paper skaters from all over the country were there to participate. as you can see, the Icelandic skate scene is not so big yet...

sirkus

nothing fixes you up after a rough Saturday night on the town like a 6km hike into some volcanic mountains! specifically, the Hengill volcano and its surroundings

at one part of the trail, you had to take of your shoes and wade across a warm river to the other side. Marina's gentleman friend Jan

the reward: swimming in a spot where a hot river + cold river meet, to = warm relaxation river

the hot river. about 70C

a hot water fall with boiling water at the bottom. this was really beautiful

OH YEAH. here are some short videos i made of the stuff on my little digital camera before it died.

i spent today in town making drawings of some stuff in Reykjavik that i just noticed a few days ago and am now totally obsessed with. i'm not usually one to do "al fresco" drawing/painting/anything like this, but it was really nice out today and it's really fun/appropriate for this vague thing i am kind of talking about.

tomorrow should also be full of adventures and/or starting to pack up and clean the place. i'm flying to Greenland on Friday.

you're welcome (just kidding)

bless...

ps. mom and dad i sent you some packages in the mail today, they should arrive within a month (seriously)

lærir að vega og mæla

ATTENTION: I LOVE SKYR

on Saturday, Reykjavik was packed with adventure. the Gay Pride parade was on, and it seemed like at least half population of Iceland (250,000) was there. it was also a beautiful and amazing day.

Marina checked out downtown for a bit, then headed over to an opening at Gallery Corridor, which is a gallery literally in the hallway of a guy's apartment. He has been doin this since the 70s and owns a nice little collection of pieces by people like Dieter Roth and Fischli & Weiss. we hung out and talked with Iceland's most well-known flower painter and then headed to meet up with Una at...

Hallgrímskirkja

the largest church in Iceland.

we were there for the "Young People's Art Night" at the Festival of Sacred Arts, which started at 8pm and would go until 1am. we had awhile till it started, so a group of us went and got a drink. this was crazy, because...

this beer cost $10. you know, the usual

housemates Ari and Heini from Finland

Una the Astonishing

we returned to church and settled in for a long night of amazing sounds.

the Klais organ

Nicholas, a guy from Washington State whose wife-to-be is from Iceland (and Una's best friend) did a sound installation in the belltower. it was extremely windy. Marina and Ari enjoying

view from the tower. Korpulfsstaðir would be located to the right

in the room below the belltower, where the faces of the clock are, we watched an awesome solo violinist play Bach in the nearly darkened room lit only by candles.

another performance at the other end of the church. one stage was set up below the organ, and another on the altar.

the last performance of the night, composed and directed by Ben Frost, was my favorite of all. it consisted of seven unplugged electric guitars being frantically strummed by seven guys, and a brass ensemble, as well as some mixer trickery. result: lovely droney meditative abstract music that was so loud you could feel it in your body. it was wonderful to be able to experience this in a church as grand as this one. what is not wonderful is the fact i didn't take any photos of this.

other composers of the evenings program: Nico Muhly, Borgar Magnason, Kjartan Sveinsson, Petur Ben and Valgeir Sigurðsson.

goodnight leif eriksson

here are 2 photos i took on my walk near the house before my camera ran out of batteries the next morning.

and lastly, a view of my room/workspace.

now, i'm off to do some more work! bless bless (icelandic = "goodbye")
